Here at Cheadle Hulme Dental and Cosmetics, our team of skilled professionals can help you maintain great oral health and tackle any existing problems with your gum health.
The term ‘dental hygiene’ refers to a combination of ‘at home’ treatments, including regular and thorough brushing, flossing, and rinsing, coupled with advanced ‘in-clinic’ cleaning techniques. It’s this combination of visiting a hygienist and maintaining high standards of oral hygiene at home that culminates in the overall protection of a patient’s teeth.
Even though you brush your teeth and floss regularly, plaque can collect in the most hard-to-reach places. If it isn’t removed, it can accumulate to form a hard layer called tartar. The problem is that once tartar is formed, no amount of normal brushing is going to remove it. Not only this, but it can also damage the bone that supports your teeth, eventually causing periodontal disease. In order to eradicate tartar, you’ll need to have your teeth cleaned by a specialised dental hygiene treatment. If you have this done regularly, it is a comfortable process and doesn’t take long to remove.
A six-monthly visit to the hygienist should ensure that your teeth remain plaque and tartar free. Consider dental hygienist check-ups as a preventive safety net for maintaining great-looking teeth. Visits to our hygienists are split into 20, 30 or 40-minute visits. Our hygienists are continually updating their knowledge and skills, and we will always provide you with the most advanced techniques and advice.
You should aim to brush your teeth at least twice daily for around 3 minutes per session. Make sure you cover every tooth and hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to target those areas that are difficult to reach. Finally, remember to clean both the inside and outside surfaces of your teeth for maximum effect. In addition, when flossing, look to move the floss backwards and forwards in between the teeth in a vertical motion and make sure you access every gap where food particles and debris might be hiding.
Brushing and flossing are essential for keeping plaque and bacteria at bay, and you should aim for at least two minutes of brushing twice a day. Brushing should include every tooth, and you should take care to target the areas that are hard to reach, as they are prone to plaque collection. Try to hold your brush at 45 degrees, and remember to clean the biting and inside surfaces.
Flossing is an excellent way of reaching the areas that are often missed during brushing, including the tiny gaps between the teeth and the gum line. When you floss, move the floss back and forth with a vertical action for accurate results. Our dental hygienist will be happy to offer more tips on caring for your teeth and gums.

I joined Cheadle Hulme dental practice after hearing amazing reviews. I had a wisdom tooth removed today and I was nervous going in. Ben and his team were brilliant, they calmed me down, told me how the procedure would work. They were patient, and used their very high tech equipment to show me exactly what they were seeing.
I was really impressed with the full set up. Aside from the tooth removal, the receptionists were helpful, professional and very friendly.
I'll definitely be staying on as a client. Highly recommend!
